Garbage Disposal Hums but Won’t Spin — 5 Quick Fixes
That humming sound means the motor has power, but the impeller may be jammed or the overload tripped. Work through these safe steps in order.
The fixes
- Reset the overload: Turn power off. Press the red reset button under the unit.
- Free the jam: Insert a ¼" hex key into the bottom socket and work it back and forth until it spins freely.
- Clear the opening: Power off; wear cut-resistant gloves and remove debris at the splash guard.
- Replace torn splash guard: A worn guard traps scraps and smells—swap it if the flaps are ripped.
- Flush & deodorize: Cold water on, disposal on, then dose a bio-enzyme cleaner per label.
